We were extremely encouraged to hear of all the wonderful ministries that are taking place throughout the Diocese

Out of the 42 churches in the Diocese , 39 are involved in HIV& AIDS ministry

CHURCHES INVOLVED IN HIV/AIDS MINISTRY IN THE DIOCESE OF CAPETOWN

 

 

1. St Georges Cathedral Cape Town

Ø      Sandwiches for mothers from the Red Cross HIV ward.

Ø      Support for the children’s homes: Fikelela Children’s Centre and Heaven’s Nest

Ø      Celebrating special days : World AIDS Day, Candlelight Memorial , TB day

Ø      Special mass for those living with HIV (Tue 7.15 am & 1.15 p.m.)

Ø      Youth  HIV education in confirmation class

Ø      Education and awareness through their board and notice board, they also send information out to libraries

Ø      Voluntary Counselling and Testing and condom distribution for  homeless who come for lunch at the Arch

Ø      Retreat for care givers

Ø      Christmas thank you lunch for Fikelela Children’s Centre and  Heavens Nest staff

Ø      Fundraising from second hand shop and overseas links.

 

  1. All Saints- Lansdowne

Ø      They support the HIV ward  Lentegeur hospital, with  knitting

Ø      Did HIV testing in church, and would like to make it an annual event.

 

  1. St. Paul’s Bree St. Cape Town

Ø      Literature is distributed at church

Ø      AIDS ribbons

Ø      Monthly silver collection (in a red bag!)

Ø      MU and AWF do knitting.

 

  1. Langa; St. Cyprians.

Ø      Weekly soup  kitchen on Mondays.

Ø      Do AIDS awareness with the soup

Ø      Christmas parties and parcels. They got a donation from tourists for this.

Ø      Collect children’s clothes for orphans

Ø      HIV+ speaker in church. 

 

  1. Westlake United Churches Trust ((supported by St. Martins Bergvliet, Christ church Constantia, and CHS)

Ø      They run a thriving support group for people living with HIV, which is very active in income generation

Ø      Second hand shop for fundraising and to allow people to access affordable clothing

Ø      Home based care: (nurse and 9 carers)

Ø      Community advice office

Ø      Food garden

Ø      Sewing bags, sold in pick and Pay

 

 

6. St. Marks District Six.

 

Ø      Awareness program for World AIDS Day and Candlelight memorial

Ø      Non perishables for Orphans and Vulnerable Children  (care for kids)

Ø      Annual fundraising potjie for Heavens Nest and Fikelela Children’s Centre, Christine Ravell & Red Cross Hospital

 

7. St. Andrews Newlands.

Ø      Logistical support for Fikelela activities e.g. registration 

Ø      Awareness raising in church (AIDS watch information bulletin)

Ø      Regular prayer and candle lighting

Ø      Fundraising , they also have overseas contacts for funds

Ø      Bingo evening

Ø      Donations of food

Ø      Fikelela Children's Centre, nappies and duvets etc

Ø      Heavens nest specific needs

Ø      Love pack once a month, 1st Sat of the month , they pack 300 food parcels

Ø      Warehouse – take collect good second hand clothing,

Ø      School jerseys for orphans knitted by parishioners

Ø      Hygiene packs for orphans

 

  1. St. Aiden's Lansdowne

Ø      Annual stationary drive for Baphumelele home in Khayelitsha

Ø      Red Cross Hospital  (as part of Athlone archdeaconry group),they support mothers of HIV+ children  with sandwiches

Ø      Prayers for orphans and clothing collection

Ø      St Josephs home, they support them with  clothing

Ø      Lunch for grandmothers from Gugulethu looking after orphans

Ø      Easter eggs to AIDS homes.

 

  1. St. Dominic’s, Hanover park

Ø      They have 10 members and have been running for 5 years.

Ø      Fundraising, they sell old clothes once a month with this they buy food parcels twice a year, and  visit the clinic

Ø      Place of hope: shelter for abused mothers and children, they visit and support

 

10. Christ Church , Constantia

Ø      They support Yamnkelani support group in Lotus River, with food, outings etc

Ø      They collect 400 hygiene packs for orphans quarterly

Ø      Educational outings

Ø      They have formed a ‘friends of Yamnkelani’

Ø      Annual jersey week

Ø      Annual blanket week

Ø      Christmas hampers

Ø      Support for Margaret’s  House.

 

11. St. Saviour’s Claremont

Ø      They collect –love packs, 20 per month

Ø      Heavens Nest – the Sunday school collection goes to heavens nest

Ø      They donate R250-00 monthly directly to Fikelela for food parcels

 

12.. St. Peters Hout  Bay

 

Ø      Support group (Uncedo Loluntu) being run at Imizamo Yethu.

Ø      It was started by members of St. Peters church and other churches

Ø      The church also donate food parcels

 

13.Church of the Resurrection ,  Bonteheuwel

Ø      They have just started with an awareness service

Ø      They support Mowbray maternity with knitted booties and caps etc

Ø      Busy finding their feet in mobilizing their congregation

 

14. St Mary’s Woodstock

Ø      Counselling  -  Sheila Stoffberg is a registered counsellor

Ø      Donation box

Ø      Support kitchen on a Wednesday 12-30 -  14-00 (homeless people in and around Woodstock)

Ø      They are planning a dance- fund raising would like this to be an Archdeaconry event

 

15 St, Luke’s Diep River

Ø      Love packs

Ø      AIDS ward at Lentegeur, monthly visits

Ø      Care for kids orphan support  project (stationary and outings)

Ø      Sweet homes farm support group, they support in various ways

 

16.. Holy Nativity, Hazendal

Ø      Sandwiches for mothers at Red cross

Ø      Sandwiches for HIV+ people in  our own community

Ø      Youth awareness

Ø      Love packs to Mowbray maternity & fikelela

 

17. Retreat, St Cyprian

Ø      Food parcels

21.St Georges, Silvertown

Ø      Love packs to  G.F.Jooste Hospital

22 St. Andrews Steenberg

Ø      Sandwich bar on Wednesdays

Ø      HIV ministry in lavender Hill

Ø      Christmas in July fundraiser

Ø      Support for Fikelela Children's Centre

Ø      Women's day celebration

 

23 Christ the Reconciler Manenberg

Their ministries all fall under one umbrella (prison, AIDS, abuse)

Ø      Support Themba care in Silvertown, with food and clothes

Ø      Food parcels to the poor (these also go to those the priest is aware are HIV)

Ø      The food comes from parishioners for these parcels.

 

24. St Mary Magdalene Gugulethu

Ø      They run a support group with about 30 members. The group meets weekly on a Wednesday at 3pm .Activities - sharing of stories, offering support to each other, invite guest speakers, do crafting, sewing, beadwork – physical exercises.

Ø      They are running an orphan support program through care for kids, currently supporting 157 orphans.

 

25 Eluvukweni, Crossroads

Ø      They are currently initiating a care for kids orphan support program. They are supporting 22 orphans

 

26 Holy Cross , Nyanga

 

Ø      They are supporting 54 orphans through the Care for Kids Program

Ø      Support group

 

27 St. Johns Wynberg (six churches make up the Parish AIDS task team – PATT, and each have a MAP – ministry to the poor – team)Together the churches collect 100 food parcels per month.

Ø      Food parcels once a month

Ø      They knit and crochet blankets, jerseys etc

Ø      They assist at the Warehouse in packing clothing packs

 

28. Christ Church Kenilworth

Ø      Food parcels per month

Ø      Support the HIV support group at Sweet Home Farms

Ø      They do prayers and support for traumatized victims at Victoria hospital (comfort box project)

Ø      Support  and do AIDS education at Sisters Incorporated

 

29. St Philips, Kenwyn

Ø      They collect children from Heavens Nest every Sunday to attend Sunday School

Ø      They are involved with the homeless children from  Lansdowne, they  wash the children, feed them, offer spiritual and emotional support

Ø      They assist with the fostering of children – (finding place of safety)

Ø      HIV & AIDS education and caring

 

30 Church of the Holy Spirit, Kirstenhof

Ø      They offer assistance and support to Westlake support group

Ø      Food parcels

 

 

 

 31 St Marks Athlone

Ø      The group hands out sandwiches on the 2nd Saturday of the month to the moms at Red Cross Hospital

Ø      They distribute grocery parcels to 5 – 6 families in Gugulethu

Ø      They distribute baby clothing to Red Cross & Gugulethu

 

 

32  St Thomas Rondebosch

Ø      They collect  Food parcels

Ø      They  knit  blankets & toys

Ø      They provide sandwiches to the Red Cross Children’s hospital

Ø      They have a close link with the grannies who are looking after orphans in Gugulethu and arrange events for the grannies.

Ø      They assist both Fikelela children’s centre & Heavens Nest

 

33  Holy Redeemer Sea Point

Ø      Although the parish is small , they support two HIV+ people

Ø      They also collect goods & foods parcels for the warehouse

 

34  Church of the Holy Spirit Heideveld

Ø      They collect clothing, stationary items, toys, toiletry items

Ø      A counseling room is available at the church but they would love it to be used more regularly

 

 

35 St John’s Crawford 

Ø      They collect food parcels

Ø      They collect stationary & toiletry items for orphans

Ø      They collect sandwiches for Mums of  children at the Red Cross Children's Hospital

Ø      They are involved in fundraising events

 

 

36 All Saints Roodebloem Road

Ø      They collect knitted blankets, jerseys, caps, bootees

Ø      They collect with toiletry items

Ø      Some awareness raising takes place

 

 

37 Church of the Ascension  Devils Peak 

Ø      They collect food parcels

Ø      They collect  old clothing

 

38  St Faith Plumstead 

Ø      The parish collects nappies for the Fikelela Children's Centre on a  monthly basis

Ø      They also collect clothing for support groups & the children’s homes

Ø      They have ongoing awareness services , focusing on highlighted days for the year

 

39 St Columba’s  Gugulethu :

Ø      The church is linked with Care for Kids. They are currently supporting 74 orphans in the Gugulethu area.

Ø      The support group has had some internal issues, including venue problems and is currently not running, but they are keen to try to start again.
